Praised by the Boston Globe for her "tonal enchantment," Julia Scolnik has enjoyed a diverse musical career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral flutist. Ms. Scolnik has performed as principal flute with many of Boston's leading orchestras including Emmanuel Music, the Boston Pops, Boston Ballet, and Boston Lyric Opera and has toured and recorded with the Boston Symphony. Her annual recitals at the Longy School of Music, known for their catchy titles and adventuresome programming, have attracted an ever-growing public. The Globe has written that she "...plays with an urgency full of fire that melts into disarming delicacy." In the chamber music world, Ms. Scolnik has appeared in celebrated festivals and has collaborated with numerous outstanding groups and artists including the Borromeo, Lydian and Brentano String Quartets. An avid performer of new music, she has premiered works with Collage New Music, The Wellesley Composer's Conference, and Composers in Red Sneakers. In recent years Ms. Scolnik has become known as the founder and artistic director of The Andover Chamber Music Series and Mistral, its ensemble-in-residence, presenting unique thematic programs with a winning combination of high spirits and serious music-making. Within a short period of time ACMS has advanced to the forefront of chamber music organizations in New England. Ms. Scolnik is a frequent featured guest on Boston's WGBH radio programs, having made over two dozen radio appearances. A graduate of the Phillips Exeter Academy, and Wesleyan University, Scolnik received a Master's Degree from The New England Conservatory. She lives in Andover with her husband, physicist Michael Brower, and two children, Sophie and Sasha. |
