October 2026 Newsletter

Welcome to our October Newsletter!

Trick or Treat!! It might be spooky season, but Sarasa is positively looking forward to bringing a delectable smorgasbord of music from Scandinavia with our upcoming November concert-set, Nordic Circle! Featuring Sarasa audience favorites, Carley DeFranco, soprano and Krista River, mezzo soprano, the program promises to be both heart-warming and fun-filled.

Up Next:

The idea behind Nordic Circle is to take our audiences on a sweeping journey of music collected from a region rich in musical culture, from the early Baroque to pop culture. Sarasa is excited to present forgotten manuscripts found in Sweden’s Uppsala University Library, portray Finland’s very own Mozart, Erik Tulindberg, savour the gorgeous melodies of Edvard Grieg, and pay homage to the indelible musical imprints made by ABBA & Björk, and much more!

Composer highlight:

Very little is known about the 17th-century Swedish composer/woman of letters/actress,  Johanna Eleonora de la Gardie (Gardy) (1661-1708). She belonged to a group of noblewomen who cultivated an intense sense of piety and sought a true, spiritual freedom through God. Significantly, de la Gardie was part of the very first all-women cast of actors in Sweden to perform Racine’s Iphigénie in 1683-1684, introducing the public to French Classicism; she had the lead role. The text and music to her psalm Welt, ich will nichts ("World, I am want of nothing’) can be found in the famous Düben collection at Sweden’s Uppsala University Library, where two of the other early Baroque works on our program by Nicolaus Adam Strungk and Samuel Friedrich Capricornus are located.

Food central:

Smorgasbord (smörgåsbord) is a Swedish feast for the eyes!

You can learn to make some of the many delicious traditional smorgasbord treats in this delightful cookbook by Swedish illustrator, Johanna Kindvall.

Book Nook:

For our reading recommendations, we are keeping with our Scandi theme, yet there are so many genres and titles of books to choose from, just like the program we have in store for you! Whether you’re into Scandi Noir (or Nordic Noir), such as Henning Mankell’s anti-hero detective Kurt Wallender or Stieg Larson’s intensely popular Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, your Autumn evenings are set! And don’t forget Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg. For those interested in historical fiction, Rose Tremain’s Music and Silence is an incredibly atmospheric novel that captures the spirit of the early Baroque. Peter Claire, an English lutenist (based on the historical figure, John Dowland) is summoned to Denmark in 1629 to join King Christian IV's royal orchestra, and more pertinently, to accompany the king to his slumber each night, seduced by the lilting tones of his plucked lute. A brilliant book.

Music Corner:

For lovers of nature and the animal kingdom, this uplifting performance of Findlandia by Jean Sibelius is accompanied by breathtaking images and fun antics from the natural world.

Cult cinema:

As Halloween approaches, there are those of us who cannot stand watching blood and gore of the Halloween or Friday the 13th movie franchises. Instead, how about Hitchcock's suspenseful 1929 thriller, Blackmail (his final silent film, which was then turned into his first "talkie"); it offers plenty of lurking shadows and dramatic intrigue!

Still streaming:
